From Dysbiosis to Diet: Rethinking the Microbiome in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • The Intercontinental Hotel 190 Elizabeth Street Brisbane City, Queensland, 4000 Australia (map)

Dr Brad Leech will present at the Metabolic Balance Nutrition Futures Summit 2026. Titled "From Dysbiosis to Diet: Rethinking the Microbiome in Inflammatory Bowel Disease," this evidence-rich session guides attendees through the microbial signatures that characterise Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis the loss of butyrate-producing species, the expansion of oral and pro-inflammatory taxa, and the fall in microbial diversity that together sustain intestinal inflammation and barrier breakdown.

From there, the focus shifts firmly to the plate. Consistent with a food-first philosophy, Brad will explore how personalised nutrition can reshape the microbiome, positioning food as the first-line intervention rather than supplementation. Drawing on the research behind anti-inflammatory dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet, he will break down the mechanisms doing the work showing how everyday fibre sources feed butyrate-producing bacteria, strengthen the gut lining, and calm inflammation and how these strategies are tailored to the individual rather than applied as a one-size-fits-all protocol.
